Eugene “Gene” John Volpe Sr., age 96, of Perry Hall, MD, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2021. He was the beloved husband of Mary T. (née Cerra) Volpe for 69 years, and loving father to E. John Volpe Jr. (wife Barbara), Cynthia V. Hunt (husband Charles), Linda V. Cerino (husband John), and Richard A. Volpe (companion Georgette). He was also the cherished grandfather of: Jason Volpe (wife Erin), Jessica Gerhard (husband Terrence); Lindsay and Alexandra Hunt; Andrew, Joshua, and Greggory Cerino; and dear great-grandfather of Callen and Jack Gerhard.
Born and raised in Highlandtown, Mr. Volpe was predeceased by his parents Frank and Anna (née Tiburzi) Volpe and siblings: Amelia “Mel” Luce, Josephine Volpe, Arthur “Otts” Volpe, Julius “Jiggs” Volpe, Mary Mallon, and Elma Savarese.
In addition to being a loving father, Mr. Volpe was a proud veteran, star athlete, dedicated teacher, and pious Christian. He proudly served in WWII in Italy as a radio operator and side gunner on a B-17 bomber, and later became a member of the American Legion. After the war he attended the University of Maryland, was a midfielder on the soccer team, and he still holds the University’s record of scoring 4 goals in one half. Following graduation, he taught industrial arts and rose to department chair at Kenwood High School and Eastern Vo-Tech (currently named Eastern Technical High School). Throughout his life he was a devout Roman Catholic, and served his community as a member of the Knights of Columbus.
To celebrate Mr. Volpe’s life, a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Church - Fullerton, 8420 Belair Road, Nottingham, MD 21236 on Friday, August 27 at 11:00am. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral mass in the entrance of the church. Inurnment will be private.
