Richard "Dickie" Heyman Obituary

Richard E. Heyman, also known as “Dickie,” passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, at the age of 86, surrounded by loving family and close friends. A lifelong Marylander, he was born in Little Italy, Baltimore on December 1, 1938, to the late Charles and Mary (Pizza) Heyman. Richard was a devoted father to his two daughters, Ashley N. Heyman and the late Christina R. Tarsell, and a proud and loving “DuDad” to his grandchildren, Juliet N. Heyman and Tanner J. Heyman, who were his pride and joy. He was the cherished younger brother of Robert L. Heyman and the late Thomas Heyman; beloved uncle to Robyn Macbeth and Deb Heyman; and great-uncle to Autumn Macbeth and Clay Macbeth.

A proud U.S. Army veteran, Richard then went on to work as a dedicated Program Analyst for the Department of Health and Human Services where he then retired. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he held a Doctorate in Law, a passion for justice that continues in the academic pursuits of his granddaughter Juliet and great-nephew Clay. Music was at the heart of Richard’s life. For 22 years he performed with the Mood Swings Big Band, where he earned the nickname “today’s Frank Sinatra.” His smooth voice and magnetic stage presence was truly one of a kind. The band was not just something he loved to be apart of, he truly cherished all the great musicians he sang alongside of and the friendships built from it. Some of his proudest moments in his musical career were singing for President George W. Bush in his home in Kennebunkport, ME and at the White House. Something he often loved to reflect on and show pictures of. Richard had an enduring love for tennis and basketball, and could be found on the court as recently as May 2025—true to his spirited and stubborn nature, even playing against doctor’s orders. He would often call himself the “Heymaker” and started writing a memoir about growing up in Little Italy. He was also a local food connoisseur, always knowing the best places to eat and eager to share them with friends and family. Friendships meant the world to Richard, he loved everyone with his whole heart. Above all, Richard was a man of deep faith and boundless love. He prayed daily for the health and happiness of those around him, and his friendships meant the world to him. Richard loved being a DuDad, more than anything in this world. Sunday breakfasts, birthday celebrations, and simply being together—these were the moments he cherished most. Anytime spent together was time well spent as he would say. His warmth, wit, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends will be remembered always.

Richard’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched with his voice, his laughter, and his heart. The Heyman family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time. A Mass in celebration of Richard’s life will be held on Monday, August 25, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Leo’s Church in Baltimore. In lieu of flowers.
